The Indian Soup - Rasam

Rasam is one of the most sought after dishes in south india. It is an excellent appetiser and can be prepared in less than 15 minutes. It can be mixed with rice or served in a bowl as like other soups.

Rasam is nothing but a juice made from either tamarind or tomato with pepper and spices. And it can be prepared in various flavors like tomato, tamarind, garlic, lime and even in pineapple. It is very easy to prepare and here is a recipe to prepare rasam at your home.

Soak some tomatoes and tamarind in water and smash them to make a puree. Grind pepper, Bengal gram, red chillies, curry leaves, dhania and garlic. Add this powder to the puree. Heat oil in a pan and fry mustard seeds in it. Pour the tomato puree into it and add salt to taste and a pinch of tamarind powder. Garnish with coriander. Wait till it bubbles and there you go, your Rasam is ready to be served.

Medicinal values of this dish are Garlic helps in easy digestion, pepper rasam is good for cold, turmeric acts as antiseptic.

If you try the rasam at your home, try to have it with rice and potatofry. It would be the delicious combination one could get.
